Zest of Shrawan Begins
Oct 01, 2024
The holy month of ritual and festivity has begun with the beginning of Shrawan.
Legend of Shrawan month
Shrawan is a sacred month in Nepal. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the month is considered sacred as women and girls keep fast. And adorning green, yellow and red bangles and pote offer their respect to the Lord Shiva.
The star Shrawan, according to Vedic Almanac, rules the sky during this period and hence is also called Shrawan mas.
With numerous rituals and festivals to seek blessings from Lord Shiva, every single day of Shrawan is considered propitious.
Devotees, despite their ages and sexes, worship the Lord Shiva especially on Mondays of this month. The married women keep fast for prosperity and the good health of their husband and family members.
However, it is believed that if an unmarried girl keeps fast on every Monday of this month shall get a husband of her choice.
Significance of Shrawan
Shrawan Sankranti:
The first day is observed as the festival of Shrawan Sankranti.
It is exercised as the merry making ceremony after the busy period of working in fields for paddy plantation. Families celebrate together sharing the love for each other with whatever they could afford for the feast.
In the evening, they burn wood and herb named “tite pati” symbolizing “Luto Phalne” – self cleaning and healing – activities.
As per the belief of the locals, it is to ward off the disease of scabies and the itching.
Obsession of Mehendi and Green Bangles:
Green is the color of Shrawan. The paddy field is green, the atmosphere is green and the beautiful part is the ladies are all green.
The Hindu ladies wear red, green and yellow bangles and decorate their palms with beautiful designs of Mehendi/henna tattoos.
It’s a common sight on Kathmandu streets that women queuing up to get their palms decorated by street mehendi artists. You may encounter many with just done mehendi arts on their hands trying to walk extremely carefully to avoid any damage to it.
Or you may witness the excitement on faces while they select green bangles or potes from local shops. All these festivities in the middle of monsoon’s unpredicted rains make Shrawan month very special of all.
We have very special shrawan gifts and hampers, bangles and mehendi to gift your loved ones for this auspicious month.
We tried to put it as a prayer for their happiness, and a life as colorful and deep as the Mehendi itself.
Expression of love & care should be the prime theme of Shrawan.
