Nepalese celebrate the Father’s Day on the no moon day of the lunar dark fortnight in the month of Bhadra (i.e. Bhadra Krishna Pakchya), which falls on August/Sept every year.

This year the Father’s Day In Nepal falls on 30th August 2019.

As indicated by the Hindu Mythology, Fathers are considered as God. They are the educator, Care Taker, Protector and have wide recognition and respect in the circle of family members and the relatives. So a day has been recognized on the Hindu tradition as a day to pay regard, reward & respect by their kids — The Father’s Day.

“Mukh Herne” signifies“ to permit somebody as our blood relation, relative or give respect or to recognize the achievement of somebody. This day Nepalese pay their respect to their dad with their most loved food & beverages, clothes or apparel, personal care, health care gifts, electronics, accessories and other father’s most loved stuff.

On father’s day, Nepalese from all over the country, whose father had passed away, visit Gokarneshwor Mahadev Temple at Gokarna. Nepalese believe that the souls of deceased fathers come to Gokarna on this day to accept the offerings made by their sons and daughters. Also the people visiting Gokarna take a holy bath in the river near by, worship Lord Shiva, and make offerings in the name of their deceased fathers.

Depending on their religious beliefs, some sons have Hindu priests perform memorial rituals called ‘Sradha’ in the name of the deceased fathers. Likewise, daughters also take a holy bath in the nearby river, worship and then make offerings to Lord Gokarneshwor, however they do not perform Sradha.

However, there is also the ritual of giving a plateful of sweets, clothes, etc to Brahmin priests as the offering. As it is believed that when the priests accept the offerings (Daan), it reaches the souls of their deceased fathers.

Father, mother, and Guru (teacher) is given the special place of God in Hindu religion. Father, Baba or Pita is the Master, Rakshak and the Palankarta which implies father is an instructor, defender and the friend in need.
